Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) affect 1 in 36 children in the United States, but their treatment is challenging due to our limited understanding of their underlying mechanisms. Jian Zhou, a collaborator of the Tjian/Darzacq lab has identified and characterized patients with syndromic ASD who carry mutations in PHF14, a protein crucial for neurodevelopment. These mutations severely disrupt PHF14 interaction with MECP2 and TCF20 complex, two key neuronal transcription factors. My research will explore how PHF14 mutations alter PHF14:TCF20 interaction and chromatin binding in cortical neurons differentiated from human pluripotent stem […]

I’m working with Dr. Mantini-Briggs and Dr. Briggs on a research project that documents Latinx leadership in founding and shaping community health clinics across California in the late 20th century. This summer, I’m focusing on El Instituto Familiar de la Raza and the Mission Neighborhood Health Center, two organizations that continue to provide culturally grounded, accessible care to Latinx communities in San Francisco. With over sixty interviews already completed, I will conduct six more with founding members, early staff, and key supporters of these clinics. I will also transcribe, translate, […]

This summer, I will be continuing my work in the Al-Sady Lab at UCSF as part of our efforts to understand how heterochromatin forms and is inherited. My project focuses on the monomethylation state of histone H3 at lysine 9 (H3K9me1), a modification that has often been overlooked. By performing CUT&RUN experiments on mESCs across different stages of differentiation and targeting multiple methylation states, we aim to better understand the mechanisms driving the transition between mono-, di-, and tri-methylation, and their relationship to stem cell differentiation and heterochromatin formation.

Emotion-related impulsivity and rumination are two patterns of dysregulation that increase vulnerability to mental health difficulties. This project uses computer-based tasks to strengthen emotional response inhibition and emotional working memory. The goal is to assess whether training these cognitive functions can reduce emotion-driven thoughts and behaviors. This summer, I will continue administering assessments, supporting the collection of data, and assisting with the data analysis process.

How are countries performing when it comes to ensuring the well-being of both the people and the planet? Can they do better? Are the results truly sustainable? The SSPI assembles data measuring country performance across 57 Policy Indicators, offering a comprehensive and data-driven perspective of socioeconomic, environmental, labor and various other key policies around the world. The SSPI groups these Policy Indicators into 16 distinct categories, each of which measures the performance of a package of related policies in a specific sector. Overall, the categories are grouped into three Pillars […]
