Fuerte: A School-Based Prevention Program for Newcomer Latinx Immigrant Youth
This summer, I will be continuing my research apprenticeship with the Fuerte Program. Administered throughout various schools in the San Francisco Unified School District, Fuerte is a school-based prevention program that focuses on fostering resiliency and strength to prevent traumatic stress. The program targets newcomer Latinx immigrant youth ages 12-18 who have been in the U.S. for five years or less. Goals of the program include promoting mental health awareness and literacy, providing participants with access to related resources, and establishing a community between participants. Along with administration of the program, the role of the research team is to assess the efficacy of the program trials and participant outcomes. Some of my goals for the summer as a research assistant include cleaning and analyzing data from the past school year, collecting additional data from the schools, and refining the codebooks.
