Separate and Unequal: The Phenomenon of Segregated Health Care

The UCSF Separate and Unequal project takes an interdisciplinary approach to study the phenomenon of healthcare segregation in the United States using legal, historical, and qualitative methods to investigate the mechanisms and impacts of payer segregation. This summer, Grecia will collaborate on a pilot study exploring the experiences of pregnant and parenting adults enrolled in Medi-Cal as they seek care at an Academic Medical Center in Los Angeles County. Under UCSF faculty mentorship, Grecia will help design and conduct interviews, recruit participants, and analyze emerging themes. With fluency in English and Spanish, we hope to connect with diverse participants and contribute to evidence that can inform more equitable healthcare policies and practices.

Thank you so much for this opportunity! As a first-generation, low-income student, having the financial support to pursue my research and continue contributing to these public health initiatives is such a blessing! These skills are so vital to practice for aspiring medical doctors and I'm so grateful to have the ability to continue strengthening these skills through this project this summer!
