Documenting Latinx Contributions to Health Care Access and Services
I’m working with Dr. Mantini-Briggs and Dr. Briggs on a research project that documents Latinx leadership in founding and shaping community health clinics across California in the late 20th century. This summer, I’m focusing on El Instituto Familiar de la Raza and the Mission Neighborhood Health Center, two organizations that continue to provide culturally grounded, accessible care to Latinx communities in San Francisco. With over sixty interviews already completed, I will conduct six more with founding members, early staff, and key supporters of these clinics. I will also transcribe, translate, edit, and analyze the interviews for inclusion in the University of California’s Calisphere archive. This work helps preserve a vital but often overlooked history, highlighting the people and efforts behind grassroots community healthcare.
Message To Sponsor
As someone deeply invested in health equity and community-based research, this project allows me to learn directly from elders whose work laid the foundation for inclusive care. It is both an academic and personal privilege to help tell their stories and ensure they are accessible for future generations. Thank you so much to the donors for allowing me the opportunity to continue this research.
