Understanding Latino Immigrant Parents’ Educational Aspirations

First-generation immigrant parents are often considered to act in their family’s best interest, especially to ensure their children’s success. For this reason, when focusing on education, many first-generation immigrant parents’ are seen as influencers and contributors to their children’s educational success. However, being considered in such way, less emphasis is placed on first-generation immigrant parents’ personal educational aspirations and, further, their desire to continue their education in the destination country. Therefore, it is important to look further into what factors may influence first-generation immigrant parents’ decision-making, how these factors influence their educational aspirations and decision to continue their education, and how it can further impact society. Thus, considering the Latino population in the Bay Area, my question is: What factors influence first-generation immigrant parents’ educational aspirations and affect their decision to continue their education? With my research, I hope to contribute to knowledge on what factors are influential for first-generation immigrant parents and how it impacts their desire to continue their education.

Message To Sponsor

Thank you for funding my research this summer! I am so glad that I was given the opportunity to not only research the topic of my interest, but also work towards developing my research skills along the way. I was able to receive amazing support through this program, which helped guide me in the research process, and gain great learning experiences from doing my own research, which helped me grow as a researcher. I am very grateful for this opportunity, as well as the support I received and the experiences I gained, and I hope that the work I did this summer will develop into a greater project as I continue my research.
