Michael Plancarte (he/him) | Legal Studies, Public Policy | Spring ‘25
Michael interned with the White House Office of Science and Technology (OSTP), where he researched and contributed to various projects regarding artificial intelligence (AI), drafting and revising memos, editing reports, planning and coordinating meetings. Through his UCDC experience, he engaged with different OSTP components, the federal government, the private sector, academia, and other nations.
How will the skills you developed through your internship help you achieve your academic and/or professional goals?
My time at the White House put my abilities to the test. The fast-paced and challenging environment developed skills and knowledge in the realm of emerging technology and AI policy which have helped me immensely, both in my semester returning from DC and in my research and work outside of academia. The work required balancing multiple work-streams, working independently and as a team, and taking initiative. I also learned what it means to work in public service at the highest levels of government which reaffirmed my desire to pursue a career in public service following law school.
What was one defining moment from your experience with UCDC?
The first day of my internship was one of the most defining moments of my UCDC experience. It was one of the most exciting days of my life as I was about to start my lifelong dream internship. The walk to the White House that morning invited a moment of reflection on my journey thus far and all the lessons, challenges, and moments that set me up for this opportunity. I was indescribably excited to begin a new chapter in my life, meet amazing people, and challenge myself to grow personally and professionally while dedicating my time to public service.
What is one way prospective applicants could prepare for the UCDC program?
I invite prospective applicants to challenge themselves to (1) reflect on what they want to do in DC and why, and (2) to seek out conversations with people who have done the program or worked in their interested field/organization/institution. Doing these two things will help prepare you to not only find the right internships for yourself but also create a moving story in your application. Also, having that head start on building your network is immeasurably valuable and you never know where that can lead you, both during your time in UCDC and beyond.
