Invisible Luggage: Memory, Protest, and Forced Migration

Scholars Journal

Julie's research explores the seemingly non-utilitarian objects that post-Soviet immigrants forced to flee to the United States have carried with them —artifacts that embody inner protest, nostalgia, and displacement while reclaiming identity, belonging, and cultural memory. The project emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach that bridges anthropological research methodology and contemporary art practices. She will conduct semi-structured interviews with immigrants from post-Soviet states who arrived in the US following the full-scale Russian- Ukrainian war (2/24/2022), driven by political pressure and persecution. Being a part of the Russian anti-war movement, Julie will focus on these groups in the Bay Area and Los Angeles
