Earthen Comforts: Exploring Passive Thermal Design

This research project examines how architectural material experimentation can inform passive cooling strategies for extreme heat. My work is focused on design development and production of Earthen Comforts: Airing Earth, a courtyard installation for M&A x Craft Contemporary in Los Angeles that investigates how traditional materials perform as thermal infrastructure in contemporary urban environments. By observing heat movement through radiation and convection throughout the day across earthen thermal mass columns and shaded woven roof panels, I study how these systems create collective comfort without relying on mechanical cooling. Through this research, I aim to understand how architecture can be used to create environmentally responsive spaces for future climate adaptations.
